This monument (the 'Somerset Monument') is on the Cotswold Edge at grid reference ST772878. near Hawkesbury Upton. It was erected in 1846 to commemorate General Lord Edward Somerset. He was a soldier son of the 5th Duke of Beaufort, (whose ancestral home is at nearby Badminton), who had served with distinction at Waterloo.

Great stuff, the Napoleanic wars and the battle of Waterloo is a favourite subject (and hobby) of mine.
Lord Robert Edward Somerset was a much decorated Cavalry officer and fought with distinction at such famous battles as Talevera,Salamanca,Vitoria and Orthes. At Waterloo he commanded the Household cavalry brigade and was at the head of their famous charge of the french cavalry corp of Cuirassiers.
